Bueno, un pequeño espacio de „publicidad en asuntos propios“. Fuimos con una prestentación del KUKUprojekt a CREATEXTIL, Madrid. Me ha hecho mucha ilusión, especialmente al pensar en la presentación de hace dos años, en Kaunas, cuando el KUKU aún buscaba un espacio estable y parecía imposible encontrarlo……
Nun, ein kleiner Freiraum für die „Eigenwerbung“. Wir sind mit einem kleinen Bildervortrag über das KUKUprojekt mit beim Textiltreff CREARTEXTIL in Madrid dabei gewesen. Ich hab mich sehr darauf und darüber gefreut, vor allem in Erinnerung an meinen kleinen Vortrag von vor zwei Jahren, in Kaunas, als das KUKU noch keinen festen Standort hatte und es unmöglich schien, diesen jemals zu finden…..

Presentación exprés: los cabos textiles del KUKUprojekt

El KUKUprojekt nació hace 7 años, coincidiendo con nuestro cambio de residencia de Madrid a un entorno rural y en respuesta a dos necesidades, una muy personal: la de encontrar un entorno vital y espacio de trabajo más acorde con nuestra forma de entender la vida; y otra más colectivo, que es el deseo de aportar desde nuestro ámbito, el artístico_creativo, propuestas de actividades para el territorio y su gente, y crear un espacio en el que trasmitir y ampliar nuestros conocimientos.
Tentamos diferentes ubicaciones y llamamos a más de una puerta buscando apoyos institucionales, sin tener éxito. Mientras tanto construimos el espacio virtual del proyecto y _a través de acciones puntuales_ un pequeño colectivo de KUKUaktivistas. A lo largo de este proceso de maduración probamos diversos formatos con el objetivo de mantener la flexibilidad de la idea inicial y estar preparados, por si llegara la „gran oportunidad“.
Y llegó, auque en formato reducido y de forma temporal. El septiembre del año pasado, el KUKUprojekt encontró un espacio físico en el que establecerse, un piso viejo, abandonado durante muchos años, en el centro de Aguilar de Campoo. Podríamos decir que este KUKU es una especie de prototipo a pequeña escala, que nos ofrece la posibilidad de arrancar con actividades permanentes y hilar los cabos textiles del KUKU, de los que quiero hablaros a continuación:
I.
Acciones colectivas reivindicando el tiempo para las habilidades manuales y reconquistando los espacios públicos para los ciudadanos
Desde el año pasado organizamos con cierta regularidad intervenciones en el paisaje y convocamos quedadas en diferentes espacios de los núcleos urbanos. Estas TRICOTADAS tenían tres objetivos básicos:
# ofrecer a todos los públicos un espacio de aproximación a las actividades textiles, sin que existan umbrales arquitectónicos ni compromisos de permanencia más allá de lo efímero de la convocatoria;
# reanimar los espacios públicos de los núcleos urbanos de nuestro entorno y recuperar su gestión y uso con propuestas generadas por los propios usuarios;
# tejer una red social entre los participantes;
II.
Colaboración en diferentes proyectos del ámbito de arte textil
El ejemplo más reciente es el proyecto 410_días, que engloba una obra textil, concretamente un hilo laberíntico tricotado a lo largo de 410 días, una video_instalación que documenta el desarrollo diario del proyecto; y una performance en espacio público como evento cultural que dará cierre al proyecto el 20 de julio de este año.
Es un hilo conductor por el territorio, un hilo que encierra dentro de sí el ciclo anual de la naturaleza, las bonanzas y las durezas de la vida rural, las reivindicaciones ante amenazas medioambientales como la fractura hidráulica, pero también habla de la mujer en el umbral de la menopausia y de la violencia de género, de soledades y compañías, y recupera un símbolo vital multicultural como lo es el laberinto univiario.
III.
el taller
Aparte de todas estas actividades con un componente colectiva, el KUKU también da respuesta a esta otra necesidad, que es un lugar de trabajo, un taller, donde retomar el proyecto que inicié en el 2002, un mural textil titulado „VIERNES _ Nómadas y náufragos“, que versa sobre los motivos interiores y exteriores que hacen que nos movamos como individuos, como colectivos y como humanidad. Este proyecto de tapiz narrativo, concebido como una gran pieza tejida en telar de alto lizo, „sufrió“ en carne propia el desplazamiento del telar. Por las circunstancias antes mencionadas, me vi obligada a renunciar a la composición inicial en una sola pieza y a fragmentarla. La fase de aclimatación emocional y laboral de todos los miembros de la familia consumió mucho tiempo, y más aún la búsqueda de un lugar donde montar el telar. El proyecto se paralizó hasta que en el 2012 decidí retomarlo.
En el taller de nuestro mecánico de coches encontré un hueco donde revisar y reelaborar el boceto y de alguna manera, esta decisión de recuperación ha sido la que nos ha conducido al KUKU, que actualmente alberga el taller en el que intentaré sacar esta obra adelante. Este taller, al estar enmarcado en un espacio cultural independiente, me brinda la oportunidad de
# abrirlo al público, poder hacer visible y comprensible las particularidades de este trabajo artístico, e intentar difundir y enseñarlo
# cultivar la lentitud,
# impartir cursos de tapiz narrativo, tejido decorativo, entrenamiento creativo textil…..
# plantear encuentros y/o exposiciones a pequeña escala para dar a conocer lo que pocas veces se ve: la diversidad existente en el mundo del arte textil contemporáneo….
IV.
Micromecenazgo textil
Actualmente estamos hilando el cabo textil más reciente del KUKU, concebido como un experimento pero con un trasfondo serio que va unido a mi proyecto personal: ahora que tengo la idea, el boceto, el material, las herramientas y además dispongo de un taller, nos hemos decidido lanzar una iniciativa de micromecenazgo textil, para intentar logara una mínima cobertura económica durante la fase de ejecución.
Lo hemos intentado en varias plataformas habituales de crowdfunding, pero no hubo suerte por una cuestión de conceptos. El contenido sí convence, pero a la hora de justificar la asignación del dinero recaudado, resulta que ninguna de estas plataformas contempla la remuneración del trabajo artístico, es decir, un honorario, un sueldo, un ingreso que facilita que una persona pueda dedicar la porción necesaria de su tiempo productivo a la elaboración de una pieza de arte. Tengo que reconocer que me pilló por sorpresa, no me imaginaba encontrarme en estos espacios alternativos con el mismo estereotipo del artista que vive del aire y por el amor al arte.
Así que nos pusimos manos a la obra y estamos montando un espacio virtual en el que explicaremos en qué consiste esta iniciativa.
Estáis todos invitados a pasaros por ahí: igual es un modelo de financiación colectiva que a más de una o uno le pueda servir para realizar su proyecto, porque todos los que nos dedicamos al arte (texil) sabemos de las dificultades que entraña esta profesión, más aún en momentos como los actuales.
No deja de ser un experimento, pero quizá valga la pena contemplar la posibilidad de construir nuestro propio espacio de ayuda recíproca.

Express presentation: the textile threads of the KUKUprojekt

The KUKUprojekt began 7 years ago, when we moved from Madrid to a rural environment, as an answer to two needs: one of them is very personal, the search for a living and working environment more in accordance with our lifestyle; the other one being of a more social nature, the wish to contribute from an artistic and creative perspective with proposals for this territory and its people, and create a space to pass on and broaden our knowledge.
We considered different locations and knocked at more than one door looking for institutional support, with no success. Meanwhile, we built the project’s virtual space and – through sporadic actions and events – a small group of KUKUactivists. Throughout this developmental process, we tried out diverse formats, with the purpose of keeping the flexibility of our original idea and being ready in case the “great opportunity” arose.
And it came, although in a reduced format and with a temporary character. In September of last year, the KUKUprojekt found a physical location to settle down, an old apartment abandoned for many years, in the centre of Aguilar de Campoo. One could say that this KUKU is, in a way, a prototype on a smaller scale, that gives us the possibility to start off permanent activities and spin the KUKU’s threads, of which I am going to speak now:
I.
Collective actions claiming time for handicraft skills and reconquering the public spaces for the citizens.
Since last year, we have quite regularly organized interventions in the landscape and convened meet-ups at different locations in urban environments. These meet-ups or TRICOTADAS (“KNITTINGS”) had three main goals:
# offer a space of introduction to the textile activities open to people of all ages and backgrounds, without architectural boundaries or the pressure of commitment beyond the brief event;
# bring back the public spaces in urban centres in our environment and recover their use and management with proposals designed by the users themselves;
# weave a social network between the participants.
II.
Collaboration with several projects in the field of the textile arts.
The most recent example is the project 410_days, which encompasses a textile piece, more precisely a labyrinth thread knitted over 410 days; a video_installation that documents the daily progress of the project; and a performance at a public space, a cultural event that will serve as closure of the project on July 20th of this year.
It is a thread that leads us through the territory, a thread that contains nature’s annual cycle, the bonanza and hardship of the life in a rural setting, the protest against environmental threats such as fracking, but that also talks about a woman on the threshold of menopause and about gender violence, about the loneliness and company, and uses what has been a symbol of life throughout time and across cultures, the single-path labyrinth.
III.
The workshop
Apart from all these activities with a collective character, the KUKU is also the answer to this other need, the need for a work space, a workshop where to resume the piece that I started in 2002, a textile mural called “FRIDAY_of nomads and castaways” that reflects on the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations that make us move as individuals, as groups and as humans. This narrative tapestry, initially designed to be one big piece woven on a high-wrap loom, suffered in first hand the displacement of the loom. Because of the previously mentioned circumstances, I was forced to give up on the first concept and divide the one piece into several. The settling process, both emotional and in terms of work, took a long time for all family members, and the search for a place to set up the loom took even more time. The project was on hold until I decided to pick it up in 2012.
In our mechanic’s garage I found a place to revisit and redraft the sketch and somehow, the decision to do so is what brought us to the KUKU, which currently harbours the workshop where I will try to bring this project forward. This workshop, being located within an independent cultural frame, gives me the opportunity to
# open it to the public, make the special features of this kind of artistic work visible and comprehensible, and try to spread and teach it.
# cultivate slowliness
# give workshops in narrative tapestry, decorative weaving, creative training in the area of textile art…
# plan gatherings and/or exhibitions on a small scale to promote what one rarely sees: the diversity within the world of contemporary textile art…
IV.
Textile crowd-funding
Currently, we are spinning the KUKU’s newest textile thread, conceived to be an experiment, but with a serious background tied to my personal project: now that I have the idea, the sketch, the materials, the tools and even a workshop, we have decided to launch a textile crowd-funding initiative to try to guarantee a minimum financial coverage during the execution phase.
We tried using several crowd-funding platforms, but it was not possible, due to the nature of our proposal. The content is convincing, but when it comes to justifying the allocation of the funds raised, it turns out that none of these platforms consider the remuneration of the artistic work, that means a salary, an income that allows a person to dedicate the necessary amount of productive time to the elaboration of a work of art. I have to admit that it took me by surprise; I had not expected to stumble in these alternative institutions upon the same stereotype of the artist who lives off air and his or her love for art.
So we stirred ourselves into action and started working on a virtual space, where we will explain the details of this initiative.
You are all welcome to drop by this space: maybe it is a collective finance model that suits more than one of your own projects, because all those who are devoted to the (textile) arts know the difficulties that this profession entails, especially in the current times.
It is still an experiment, but perhaps we should consider the possibility of creating our own space of mutual support.
